(UK, 2017) Director: Marianne Elliott. Playwright: Tony Kushner. Cast: Andrew Garfield, Denise Gough, Nathan Lane, James McArdle, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett.

Tickets in London to this summer’s new staging of Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning play are already sold out, but you can still see a live transmissions (and encore presentations) of Parts 1 and 2 at Cinestudio. Capturing the apocalyptic feel of America in the mid-1980s with a simmering rage, Angels stares down the scourge of AIDS and an uncaring Reagan administration, as New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, anger and loss. The interconnected characters include a gay couple, one of whom is dying, a young Mormon couple torn apart by secrets and drugs, and lawyer Roy Cohn, who is HIV positive but won’t admit it. The Olivier and Tony award winning director is Marianne Elliott (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), and the cast features Andrew Garfield, Denise Gough, Nathan Lane, James McArdle, and Russell Tovey. An epic experience in three hours and 30 minutes, with two 15 minute intervals.
