Maria Venegas was born in the state of Zacatecas, Mexico, and immigrated illegally to the United States at age four. Her first book, Bulletproof Vest, is due out in the spring of 2014. It has been excerpted in Granta 108, The Guardian, and Granta en Espanol. Her short stories have also appeared in Ploughshares and Huizache. She received her M.F.A. from Hunter College, where she was awarded a Hertog Fellowship and worked as research assistant to Frank McCourt. She lives in New York.
