(UK, 1962). Director: John Schlesinger. Screenplay by Willis Hall, Keith Waterhouse,
based on the novel by Stan Barstow. Cast: Alan Bates, June Ritchie, Thora
Hird, Leonard Rossiter.

Summer of Great Cinema is filled with new restorations of great films: Maurice, Il Boom, Swept Away, and the erotically-charged‘kitchen sink’ drama, A Kind of Loving! Alan Bates (Far From the Madding Crowd, Women In Love, Gosford Park) was never more charismatic than as a Lancashire draughtsman who yearns for a naive typist, played by June Ritchie. Inspired by Italian neorealism, the film does not lounge with aristocrats on country estates, but follows working class people trying to get by. As Bates’ and Ritchie’s passion turns into pregnancy, marriage and drudgery, the social revolution that would soon jolt the world simmers beneath the surface.
“One of the most important films of the British New Wave… high drama played out in a world onto which British cinema had hitherto rarely deigned to turn its gaze.” – Jennie Kermode, Eye For Film. 112 min.
