Tuesday Common Hour: The Politics of Parenthood and Presidential Elections by Laurel Elder
Tuesday, March 04, 2014
12:15 PM - 1:30 PM
Mather Hall Rittenberg Lounge
Mary Beth White
Professor of Political Science Laurel Elder will discuss her book, The Politics of Parenthood: Causes and Consequences of the Politicization and Polarization of the American Family (State University of New York Press, 2012) which she co-authored with Steven Greene at North Carolina State University. She will share their empirical research, which documents how parenthood and the family have become politicized in U. S. politics in response to significant changes to the structure of the American family. She will also discuss the significance of the politicization of parenthood and the family for the 2012 presidential election.
Laurel Elder is Professor of Political Science at Hartwick College in New York where she teaches courses on public opinion, elections, and gender in American politics. She has published several articles exploring why women, especially Republican women, remain so significantly under-represented in U.S. political office. With her co-author Steven Greene, she published a book, The Politics of Parenthood (State University of New York Press, 2012) as well as several articles exploring the way the very personal act of raising a child shapes the political attitudes of men and women.
