The Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Specialist supports students at Trinity College located in Hartford and Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. Trinity College and Wesleyan University recognize student academic potential can be negatively impacted by misuse of substances. This role coordinates and implements wellness and prevention initiatives and strategies in an effort to reduce negative consequences associated with heavy episodic drinking and substance misuse. Working collaboratively among Student Affairs colleagues, faculty, students and families to address risk factors and promote protective factors associated with student health and safety.

Duties and Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with Health Education Programming, Residential Life, Greek Life, Health Center and Counseling Center staff; duties include:
• Conducts assessment and strategic planning of a comprehensive alcohol and other drug prevention program for students including the development of strategic plans, goals, and measurable objectives for alcohol and other drug prevention as well as wellness promotion programs and services.
• Plans, implements, and evaluates theory and evidence-based health promotion strategies, policies, programs, and services designed to educate the student population in matters related to student substance abuse prevention.
• Trains professional staff, and supervises undergraduate students/peer educators.
• Trains, oversees staff and conducts Brief Alcohol Screening and Interventions for College Students (BASICS) and Marijuana Prevention Program (MAPP) educational interventions.
• Oversees and works with staff on delivery of educational interventions.

Preferred Qualifications
• Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) and/or Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) with an advanced degree in Health Education, Public Health, Social Work, psychology or related field.
• Demonstrated commitment to professional development in AOD or related field.
• Experience in developing and facilitating large group training events and prevention workshops/presentations, focus groups, motivational interviewing for substance abuse prevention, and experience as a BASICS provider.

Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in prevention, public health, social work, or related field
• Two to four years of demonstrated professional experience with college-aged clients working in higher education and AOD prevention
• Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work with the strategic prevention framework and current AOD issues
• Demonstrated ability to work with diverse population of students, faculty and staff
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement AOD education and prevention programs
• Demonstrated ability working with data collection, analysis, and reporting
• Demonstrated time management, organizational, supervisory, flexibility and creativity skills
• Experience with social norms and marketing campaigns
• Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills, including presentation and public speaking with demonstrated competence in technology required for duty completion (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
